The Latest Forecast Discussion

000 FXUS66 KSTO 250925 AFDSTO Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 225 AM PDT Sat Mar 25 2023 .SYNOPSIS... Cool unsettled weather pattern continues into next week with mainly mountain snow showers. Areas of morning frost will be possible through the weekend. More widespread rain and heavy mountain snow will return early next week with the heaviest expected Tuesday. && .Discussion... Overall we are going to see quiet conditions this weekend but a long wave trough will be set up over the Rockies. A short wave within this trough will push over the northeast part of the state later today into tonight. This will bring a few light shower chances to the Shasta County mountains and parts of the Sierra. No impact is expected with these showers as precip will be minimal with any activity. Northerly winds will pick up this afternoon and we could see a few gusts to 25 mph across the Sacramento Valley. Otherwise we will see a mix of clouds and sun during the day with cool daytime highs. Overnight lows will remain chilly for this time of year running 10-15 below average. This will lead to some patchy frost in the lower elevations and you may want to bring in sensitive plants or cover newly planted gardens. Quiet weather wont last into next week as a trough digs down the Canada coast and pushes west over the Pacific. This will allow the low to pull in a little bit higher moisture with the IVT pushing between 250-500 kg/ms. There is still some uncertainty with how quick the trough digs and a smaller degree of uncertainty on how far west the low will go. It looks like warm air advection precip will spread into NorCal later Monday with the cold front pushing from north to south Monday night into Tuesday morning. The heaviest precip can be expected along and head of the cold front. Activity will become more showery behind the cold front except over the mountains where upslope flow will keep precip widespread through the day. Some instability builds in behind the cold front too mainly over the Sacramento Valley. A few thunderstorms will be possible late morning into the afternoon. As the low pushes over the Pacific it will go through strong cyclogenesis on Monday off the Oregon coast. This will bring increasing low level winds with 850 mb winds reaching 40-55 knots and 700 mb wind reaching up to 65 knots. The strongest jet will be Monday night into Tuesday morning. This will lead to gusty winds especially Tuesday morning as we start to mix some. Wind gusts 30-45 mph can be expected across the Valley with the strongest winds over the northern Sacramento Valley and gusts as highs as 65 mph over the Sierra. QPF with this storm is looking to be 0.40-2.0" across the Valley with the highest totals in the northern Sacramento Valley, 0.75-2.75" in the Foothills, and 1.50-4.25" over the mountains with the highest totals from around I-80 north. Snow levels will be 3000-4000 feet over the Sierra and 2500-3500 feet over Coastal Range and Shasta County mountains. Several feet of snow is expected above 3500 feet with several inches possible down to 2500 feet. -CJM && .EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Wednesday THROUGH Saturday)... Clusters and ensembles indicate that NorCal will be on the backside of the deep trough as it shifts east during the second half of next week. Numerous showers and perhaps a few thunderstorms will be likely Wednesday under the cold upper low, then shower chances likely to retreat to the mountains for the end of the week. Temperatures will be around 10-15 degrees below average at mid-week, moderating somewhat by the end of the week. && .AVIATION... VFR conditions at TAF sites over the next 24 hours. Isolated MVFR conditions vicinity snow showers northern Sierra Nevada after 22Z. Areas northerly surface wind gusts 15-25 kts in the Central Valley after 16Z. && .STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... Frost Advisory until 8 AM PST Sunday for Carquinez Strait and Delta-Central Sacramento Valley-Motherlode-Mountains Southwestern Shasta County to Western Colusa County-Northeast Foothills/Sacramento Valley-Northern Sacramento Valley-Northern San Joaquin Valley-Shasta Lake Area / Northern Shasta County- Southern Sacramento Valley. Winter Storm Watch from Monday morning through Wednesday morning for Burney Basin / Eastern Shasta County-Mountains Southwestern Shasta County to Western Colusa County-Shasta Lake Area / Northern Shasta County-West Slope Northern Sierra Nevada-Western Plumas County/Lassen Park. && $$
